So much has been said and written about sex on college campuses — the frenzied hook-up culture, the STD rates — it might seem as if there’s nothing left to say. Then again, it’s sex on college campuses: There will always be something to say. That’s lucky for “Savage U,” a clever new docu-series on MTV that follows syndicated sex columnist Dan Savage as he travels across the country fielding queries from students about sex and relationships.

Dan Savage has already proven he’s the all-around best. His hilarious and smart sex advice column is syndicated, he guest-judged on RuPaul’s Drag Race last week, and he’s against bullying and Rick Santorum.

So this is really just icing on the cake. Savage is taking his sex advice to MTV, with a new show called Savage U. The show, which premieres this Tuesday, will follow Savage as he visits different college campuses.

Dan Savage, of “Savage Love” fame, is bringing his sex-and-relationship column to life with MTV show “Savage U.” He tours various colleges in the United States, encouraging students from coast-to-coast to ask questions about love, sex and relationships. They have the choice of anonymity (as in the town hall Q&A sessions), or, if selected, they can appear on a segment of “Savage U” for all the world to see.

Dan Savage first brought his frank and often funny brand of sex and relationship advice to Seattle’s alternative newspaper in 1991. Now he’s bringing it to MTV.

The 47-year-old columnist, podcaster and pundit answers questions from college students around the country on “Savage U,” which premieres Tuesday. Each 30-minute episode is set at a different university, and students determine the topics discussed.

Giving sex and relationship advice to inquisitive college students isn’t new for Dan Savage. He’s been doing it for years in his print column, Savage Love, on a podcast and in person with campus visits. With MTV’s “Savage U” (11 p.m. Tuesday) he heads back to campus with a production crew in tow. Savage, columnist and editorial director for Seattle’s The Stranger alternative weekly, spends between three and five days at a university for each “Savage U” episode. That includes the taping of a Q&A session with an auditorium full of college kids who submit anonymous, written questions about sex and relationships.

Dan Savage never intended to be the anti-bullying Gandhi, and he couldn’t have predicted he would become a voice of reason for a generation of young adults confused about their sex lives. A controversial sex columnist and alternative newspaper editor, Savage regularly gets stopped at airports and asked for advice on sexual ethics and techniques these days. Gay teens hug him in gratitude for co-creating the “It Gets Better” campaign. Now he’s launching a reality series: MTV’s “Savage U,” which premieres Tuesday. It follows Savage as he travels to college campuses across the country to lecture and take questions from students seeking his sexual wisdom.

You’re probably familiar with Dan Savage because you— or, OK, “a friend”— has taken advice from his humorous, nationally syndicated sex advice column, “Savage Love.” Or perhaps you know Savage from his work as the co-founder of It Gets Better, a video-based project formed in 2009 in response to the suicides of teens who’d been victims of sexual identity-themed bullying. Soon you’ll be able to catch Savage on MTV as well — the network has confirmed tha they will begin airing “Savage U” April 3.

MTV is premiering its new docu-series “Savage U” on Tuesday, April 3 at 11 p.m. EST.
